Voting
Voting is anonymous. There are no accounts. To allow one vote per book from each browser, and to limit how many votes can come from one internet connection, we keep, for each vote:
- a one-way, keyed hash of your IP address (we never store the address itself);
- a one-way, keyed hash of a random ID your browser makes and keeps in its local storage;
- the book, your vote (CHUD or WOKE) and the time.
The hashes cannot be turned back into your IP address or browser ID. We use them only to block repeat votes and vote flooding. Clearing your browser's site data removes the random ID.
Visit counts
To see how the site is used, we count page views per day, per page and per country. The country is worked out from your IP address using DB-IP's free database on our own server; the IP address itself is not stored. To count unique visitors we keep a one-way, keyed hash of your IP address together with the date. It changes every day, so it can't be used to follow you from one day to the next, and these hashes are deleted after 90 days.
Cookies
We set no cookies and use no third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
Open Library
Book searches go straight from your browser to Open Library (Internet Archive), so they see your IP address and what you search for; their own privacy policy applies. Book covers are fetched by our server and served from chudrank.com, so loading covers doesn't contact anyone else.
Ko-fi
The "Support me" button and the Tip link are provided by Ko-fi. To show the button, your browser loads it from Ko-fi's servers, and Ko-fi's button loads a font from Google Fonts, so Ko-fi and Google can see your IP address and browser details. Payments are handled entirely by Ko-fi; we never see card details. Ko-fi's own privacy policy applies.
Server logs
Our web server keeps short-lived technical logs, which include IP addresses, to keep the site running and secure.
